FencesIf your chain link fence post is damaged, it may need to be replaced. You can do this yourself or hire a professional to do it for you. It’s best to work on one post at a time, so you can focus your attention and effort. The first step is to find the location of the damaged post and mark it. Then use a shovel to dig out the old post and fix or replace it with a new one.

During the installation process, the contractor will use chain-link fence ties to attach the top of the fabric to the rails on either side of it and prevent sagging. This will increase the lifespan of your fence. If the contractor doesn’t use these ties, you will need to temporarily tie the fabric to the top rails with zip ties or small wire pieces.

Purchase a roll of chain-link fence fabric at a home improvement store and cut a section that’s a link to two longer than your existing damaged fabric. Then, using lineman’s pliers, undo the wire ties from the area you’re repairing. Save the removed ties for later reuse.

Before you begin your chain-link repair project, check to make sure your tools are ready to go. You’ll need a pair of pliers, a pair of gloves, and earplugs or noise-blocking muffs to protect yourself from the noise created by your reciprocating saw.

The first thing you’ll need to do is remove the wire ties from the damaged portion of your fence’s top rail. Pull them away from the rail and set them aside for later use. Then slide the tapered end of your replacement rail into place, ensuring that it lines up with the soon-to-be-cut part of the existing rail.

Once the replacement rail is in place, use a carriage bolt to fasten it to the terminal post. Repeat the entire process for each of the remaining terminal posts on your fence. When you’re done, you will have a strong, safe, and durable chain-link fence. Then, you can enjoy the safety and security it provides for your property and family.

A bent rail is one of the more common chain-link fence problems. Everything from falling tree limbs to kids climbing on the fence can cause it to bend and disrupt the structural integrity of the fence. The good news is that it’s a relatively simple repair job for someone with the right tools and know-how.

The first thing to do is determine the size of the new rail, as it will need to match the existing diameter. This can be done by measuring the distance between two corner posts. Once the new rail is cut to the correct length, it’s time to reattach it to the fence. You’ll need to use wire ties about every twenty-four inches to keep the rail in place and prevent it from sagging.

Using the lineman’s pliers, start by loosening the end of the rail that is holding it to the corner post. Once it’s loose enough to remove, carefully pull it off of the post. Next, locate the section of undamaged fence on either side of the damaged rail and use one of the wires removed in the previous step to weave the replacement chain link fabric into the existing fence fabric. Make sure to twist the bottom end of the wire and bend it shut at the top to secure the fabric in place.

If you notice holes in your fence, it’s important to get them fixed quickly to prevent further damage and protect the safety of your family or pets. Small holes are easy to fix and don’t require replacing a whole section of fence, but larger holes might need a more permanent solution, such as adding another row of mesh to the fence.

A professional can help you choose the best way to repair your fence, depending on its condition and the extent of the damage. They’ll also be able to help you avoid costly future repairs by fixing problems early on. Bent or broken rails, for example, can easily compromise the structure of the entire fence and lead to a full replacement in the near future.

If the bottom rail of your fence is damaged, you may need to remove and replace it. To do this, first, locate the damaged section of fence fabric and mark where it ends and begins. Then identify precisely how far the damage spreads outward from these points, so you can remove and replace the proper length of fence rail. Locate where the wire wraps around the rail along this damaged section, and use your linesman’s pliers to untwist these wires. This will free the damaged rail from the rest of the fence. Once the damaged rail is disconnected, you can remove and replace it with new chain link fence fabric.

Obtain a length of new rail and lay it on the ground next to your existing fence. Have a helper hold the rail in place, then measure the distance from the nearest terminal post to the end of the old rail. This will give you the measurement you need to cut your new rail. Mark the length of the new rail on the side that will be cut, then use your reciprocating saw to cut it. Be sure to wear protective equipment, as reciprocating saws can be dangerous.

Survey the new rail to determine where it’s needed to connect to the existing fence, then cut it to that length with your reciprocating saw. When you’re done, slide the tapered end of the replacement rail into the section of the existing pipe where you made your cut.

Now you’re ready to reconnect the new rail and your repaired fence. First, loosen the corner post’s lower tension band and remove the wire ties from the bottom rail section. Next, rest the new rail on top of the damaged section, and have your helper hold it in place while you mark a cutting line on the old rail. Finally, loosen the old rail and use your reciprocating saw to cut it away from the post.

Next, install the new rail by sliding a rail coupling over one end of the replacement rail and connecting it to the existing fence section. Loosen the other rail end on the corner post, then align the old and new sections of fence rail and slide the rail coupling over it.

A bent top rail is a common problem with chain link fences. Heavy snow or ice accumulation can cause the rail to bend. If it’s not too bad, you may be able to straighten it with your hands or a pipe wrench. If the bend is too large, however, you will need to replace it. Purchase a length of replacement rail from your local home improvement store. Be sure to get one that is the same size as your existing rail section. The new rail section will have a tapered end that fits over the existing one.

Begin your repair by removing the wire ties that are connecting the fence fabric to the top rail. Use lineman’s pliers to untwist the wires and pull them away from the damaged section of the rail. Next, remove the damaged section of the rail by cutting it with either a hacksaw or a reciprocating saw. Once you have removed the damaged section, locate the area where the new piece will go. Use a pencil to mark the location on the old rail section. Place the smaller, tapered end of the new rail section over the existing rail and slide it as far as you can.

Connect the new rail with a coupling that connects the two ends of the old and new sections of rail. Then insert the new rail into the gate post and tighten it. If necessary, add a coupling to the corner posts to connect them to the rail.

Once the new rail is connected to the corner posts, your contractor can install the fence’s tension wire. This helps to keep the bottom of the fence from drawing up. It can also prevent debris and dirt from falling into the gap between the ground and the fence.

If the fence has been damaged by a fallen tree or blown down by a strong wind, your contractor will probably have to replace part of the mesh. If you have a small damage spot, your contractor can use linesman’s pliers to twist the damaged chain links around the undamaged ones.
